I’ve been a huge fan of Dogfish Head Brewery for many years. My unique entry point into their beer is the long-standing Dogfish Head Alehouse in my town. The food there is amazing pub fare, and I found myself trying their beers out at meals, initially unaware that they actually bottled and distributed their brews.
As I’ve explored their beer selections, I keep coming back to Midas Touch. It has an interesting story, an ale that contains elements of mead and wine, based on ingredients found in the tomb of King Midas. It’s sweet as far as beer goes, but with that honey flavor comes a nice smooth bite, reminding you that, yes, this IS a beer. It’s very tasty, and I love it with a savory companion, like a good burger. Midas Touch is definitely something special and unique, that won’t be for everyone, but is absolutely worth tasting for yourself.
As far as game pairings go, when we’re talking about King Midas, I think treasure. When I think treasure, I immediately think about DuckTales for the NES. Wait, you say, isn’t that an ancient game? You’re right, and what better companion for an ancient ale that might sit alongside long-forgotten riches? Conveniently, DuckTales was recently released digitally as part of the Disney Afternoon Collection for PS4 and Xbox One. The merry miserly misadventures of Scrooge McDuck are once again easily available for your distinguished gaming leisure.
For me, DuckTales was a title that embodied my childhood. I loved the show, and I loved the heck out of that game. If you’re not familiar, it’s a slightly-exploratory platformer with a few unique play mechanics, most notably the pogo-cane-bounce, a move that was recently borrowed by Shovel Knight to great effect. The controls are tight, the sprite-work is beyond belief, and the music is absolutely dynamite. The best part is, you get DuckTales in addition to several other amazing NES titles that Capcom developed based on Disney licenses. The Disney Afternoon Collection is an absolute steal.
So, crack open a golden Midas Touch, fire up DuckTales, and experience a pairing that’s a true jewel.
